Description
Regarded as Colt’s perfection of the cap & ball revolver, the 1860 Army was designed around the lightweight frame of the 1851 Navy, but chambered for the more powerful .44-caliber ball. The first models featured fluted cylinders, while later models incorporated a belted cylinder for greater strength. Another improvement was the improved “creeping” loading lever that increased leverage and provided for easier loading. Over 129,000 were issued to Union troops during the Civil War, and the 1860 Army is still considered perhaps the ultimate combat handgun of the percussion era.
